St. Peter of the Fields Council No. 5173 of Rootstown was the winner of the 2007-08 Star Council, Columbian, Father McGivney and Founders Awards that were announced by the Supreme Council office.
This was the second year that St. Peter's Council No. 5173 has been awarded these special awards for outstanding service in the Knights of Columbus.

There were only 501 Double Star winners that received special awards from the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus.
The awards were presented to St. Peter's Council No. 5173 at the Past Grand Knights Dinner held on Feb. 5 when the group also celebrated the 48th anniversary of the reception of its charter from the State of Connecticut, Supreme Council, Knights of Columbus.
Thirty-six current members of the Knights of Columbus joined in the commemoration of 48 years of service, faith and fraternity.
In 1961, the Rev. Joseph Tomasch, pastor of St. Peter of the Fields Catholic Church in Rootstown, was looking for a working men's club.
It was brought to his attention that the Knights of Columbus would be the perfect working men's club for the parish.
The District Deputy, James Delano, was contacted. Twenty-five men were needed to start a Council. Soon 29 men from St. Peter of the Fields parish, including Rev. Tomasch, had signed up.
On Aug. 1, 1961, a charter was granted and the St. Peter of the Fields Council No. 5173 was formed. The first meeting recorded was on Aug. 10, 1961. The first officers were elected on Aug. 24, 1961, and they were installed by District Deputy James Delano and Frank Sovinski. Stanley Ambrose was elected the first Grand Knight, while David Woolf, John Rodenbucher and Ronald Albright served as the council's trustees.
Today, St. Peter's Council, Knights of Columbus is a part of the international Catholic Organization with 114 members.
Last Year, St. Peter's Council was awarded its second Star Council Award from Supreme Council, Knights of Columbus.
This is the highest honor given to councils by the Order. This year, the members of St. Peter's Council are under the direction of Grand Knight David Gaydos.
